PILATES |
Pilates is a form of total body conditioning and training developed by Joseph Pilates during the 1920’s. Pilates is essentially a workout that improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the whole body without the risk of injury. Pilates has gained a great deal of popularity here in South Africa as more people experience the various benefits of it. You do not require a referral from a medical practitioner to take part in Pilates and you may book directly at the clinic. After a few one-on-one or two-on one (if you do it with a friend) sessions you will be invited to join the classes. The one-on-one sessions will give you a better understanding of the principles of Pilates prior to joining the class. Many of our Pilates clients are referred to us by local Neuro- and Orthopaedic surgeons prior to and or after surgery to provide support to the injured area. |

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
What to expect when first calling If you are a new patient the receptionist will try and answer any questions you may have and explain the procedure when you come for your first appointment. She will explain everything you need to know about the first appointment as well as what to bring. An appointment will be booked as soon as possible which is normally within 48 hours. How many treatment sessions will I need? There is no set number as this will depend on your problem. The best evidence shows that on average you will need about 4-6 treatment sessions spread over a few weeks. What treatment do chiropractors give? Chiropractors mainly use manipulation, which improves the movement and function of the spine and joints. They may also use a technique called dry needling (using sterile disposable needles) which is used to block out the pain and for muscle relaxation. Ultrasound and interferential short wave therapy are also used where necessary. Does chiropractic manipulation hurt? No, chiropractic manipulation is usually painless, if the condition is acute or inflamed the treatment will be modified to your own particular problem and chiropractors are qualified to appreciate when this is necessary. On some occasions, joints can become temporarily uncomfortable for a period of 12-36 hours after treatment. This is perfectly normal and a patient should not be alarmed. How long will it take before I am better? Most problems will need a course of treatment and the majority of treatments will take place in the first two or three weeks. You will be asked to book an initial course of four sessions. Stretches will be given to you initially followed by strengthening exercises, to help reduce any possible relapse. We also strongly recommend a course of Pilates to help with your rehabilitation. Can the problem be cured? The vast majority of back pain is due to simple joint straining which should respond within a month. More chronic long-lasting problems may take longer. This will be explained to you as you go through your treatment sessions with your chiropractor. I am a past patient, what happens if my problem returns? Even though you may feel this problem is the same as the last, this may not always be the case. Therefore your chiropractor will need to re-examine you before treatment starts – you may have acquired other medical problems and this could affect your treatment. Do I need to contact my general practitioner? Not unless you wish to. You do not have to visit your GP for an ‘Off Work Certificate’ as your chiropractor can give you one. Should I exercise while having treatment? Of course, you will need to do a bit less when the pain is bad. It is not advisable to stay in bed unless you have to and certainly not for more than 1 or 2 days. The most important thing is to get moving again as soon as you can, as sensible movement aids your recovery. The Chiropractor will develop an exercise programme for you to do at home. Will my medical aid pay for the treatments? We do accept medical aids and send e-claims directly to the medical aid. Or, you may continue as before, to pay for treatment in which case you will receive a receipt to send through to your medical aid. Our consultation and treatment cash prices are below medical aid rates. The amount differs depending on the medical aid. I have an injury that occurred at work (IOD), can you assist? At Salter Chiropractic and Pilates we can assist you in the necessary steps for compensation due to a work-related injury. According to the Department of Labour, an Employer’s Report Of An Accident Form must be completed following a work-related injury. You are welcome to ask us if you require any assistance with this process. Download form |
